FTC begins enforcing TAKE IT DOWN Act's 48-hour removal duty for intimate deepfakes

Enforcement or rulingInformationUSConfirmed

On the Act's platform compliance date the FTC began enforcement and launched TakeItDown.ftc.gov for complaints against services that ignore removal requests. Covered platforms must take down reported non-consensual intimate images, including AI-generated ones, and known identical copies within 48 hours; the FTC had already sent compliance letters to 15 companies including Meta, TikTok, X, Amazon, Apple and Discord.

Why it matters

Any US service hosting user images or video, including AI image generators, now needs a working notice-and-removal channel or faces FTC civil penalties.
