Character.AI and Google agree to settle lawsuits over teen suicides and self-harm

Enforcement or rulingInformationHealthUSReported

Court filings disclosed settlements in principle between families and Character.AI, its founders Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas, and Google, resolving suits in Florida, Colorado, Texas and New York, including the case over 14-year-old Sewell Setzer III. Terms were confidential and there was no admission of liability; Character.AI had already barred under-18s from open-ended character chats in October 2025.

Why it matters

The first resolution of chatbot wrongful-death claims keeps product-liability theories against companion apps alive while similar suits against OpenAI continue.
