IMF: new AI-linked skills lift wages but widen inequality and hit young workers

ResearchWorkFinanceINTLConfirmed

An IMF Staff Discussion Note found about one in ten vacancies in advanced economies asks for at least one new skill, roughly twice that share in emerging markets, and that AI skills carry a wage premium. It warns that the gains are uneven, may hollow out middle-income jobs, and that employment of young workers suffers in areas of fast AI-skill adoption where AI does not complement their work; it also introduces a cross-country Skill Imbalance Index.

Why it matters

It gave finance ministries an IMF evidence base for funding reskilling, released days before Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva described AI as a 'tsunami' for labour markets at Davos.
