OpenAI, SoftBank, Oracle and MGX launch $500bn Stargate data-centre venture

OpenAI announced Stargate, a new company that intends to invest $500bn over four years in US AI infrastructure, with $100bn to be deployed immediately; SoftBank, OpenAI, Oracle and MGX are the equity funders, SoftBank leads on finance and OpenAI on operations, and the first build is in Texas. On 23 Sep 2025 five more US sites (two in Texas, one each in New Mexico and Ohio, and a Midwest site later named as Wisconsin) took planned capacity to nearly 7GW and more than $400bn.

Why it matters

It set the gigawatt scale that every other frontier lab, chip supplier and utility has since had to plan around.
