Presidential memo orders rapid rewrite of Pentagon autonomous-weapons rules

PolicyDefenceGovernmentUSReported

President Trump signed National Security Presidential Memorandum 11, 'Artificial Intelligence in the National Security Enterprise', which according to reporting gives the Pentagon 90 days to revise DoD Directive 3000.09 on autonomy in weapon systems and to review it annually as AI capabilities change. Senator Ruben Gallego wrote to Hegseth on 12 June asking how the faster rewrite would guard against friendly fire and civilian harm and whether the Defense Autonomous Warfare Group has civilian-harm staff.

Why it matters

3000.09 is the main US rule requiring senior review and appropriate human judgement for autonomous weapons, so loosening it changes what can be fielded and the US position in UN talks.
