Pentagon labels Anthropic a supply-chain risk after it refuses to drop two limits
Anthropic refused a Department of War demand to allow all lawful uses of Claude, keeping two limits: no mass domestic surveillance of Americans and no fully autonomous weapons. On 27 February President Trump ordered federal agencies to stop using Anthropic products with a six-month phase-out, and Hegseth said contractors doing business with the military may not deal commercially with the company; the formal designation followed in early March.
Why it matters
It is the first use of a supply-chain-risk designation against a US frontier lab over its usage policy, signalling that vendor-imposed limits on military use can cost access to the whole defence market.
