Pentagon plans four-star Autonomous Warfare Command by October 2027
Hegseth announced an Autonomous Warfare Command, a new four-star combatant command with 'service-like authorities' (including over personnel and budgets) to scale robotic and autonomous systems across the joint force, due to stand up by 1 October 2027. The bridge is Project Agincourt, the renamed unmanned-systems portfolio office, now led by DIU director Owen West with a Navy SEAL senior chief and tasked to prototype 'warfighting acquisition', alongside new military career fields for autonomy.
Why it matters
Giving autonomy its own combatant command with budget and buying power would make drones and AI-enabled weapons a permanent, separately funded part of US force structure.
