Department of War launches GenAI.mil with Google's Gemini for Government

LaunchDefenceGovernmentUSConfirmed

The Chief Digital and AI Office launched GenAI.mil, a department-wide generative AI platform meant for about 3 million military and civilian personnel, with Google's Gemini for Government as the first model. It is authorised at Impact Level 5 for controlled unclassified data; Google says department data is not used to train its public models.

Why it matters

Frontier chat models became a standard desk tool across the US military, creating a large captive market for model vendors and a test of IL5-level security for commercial AI.
