Pentagon AI office awards Anthropic, Google, OpenAI and xAI up to $200m each

The Chief Digital and AI Office of what was then the Department of Defense announced agreements with Anthropic, Google, OpenAI and xAI, each with a ceiling of $200m. The awards fund agentic AI workflows using frontier models across warfighting, intelligence, business and enterprise systems.

It brought the leading frontier labs directly into US military work at once and set up the vendor relationships that later fuelled the dispute over usage limits.
