US Southern Command sets up a dedicated autonomous warfare command

SOUTHCOM commander Gen. Francis L. Donovan established the SOUTHCOM Autonomous Warfare Command to field autonomous, semi-autonomous and uncrewed systems across domains in Latin America and the Caribbean, including against narcoterrorist networks, working with the Defense Autonomous Warfare Group. Covington's reading of the FY2027 budget request puts proposed DAWG funding near $54bn, up from about $226m, most of it dependent on a reconciliation bill.

Why it matters

Autonomy moved from experiments into a standing operational command with a live mission, as the Pentagon signalled a department-wide sub-unified command for autonomous warfare.
