Delhi High Court refuses ANI's bid to stop OpenAI training on its news

Enforcement or rulingInformationINConfirmed

Justice Amit Bansal dismissed news agency ANI's interim injunction application, holding prima facie that storing its articles for training falls within fair dealing under Section 52(1)(a) of the Copyright Act and that ChatGPT's retrieval-based answers were not substantially similar to ANI's text. The court did find it had jurisdiction over OpenAI despite US-based servers; the findings are provisional pending trial.

Why it matters

India's first major AI-training ruling leaves model training on news content unrestrained for now while the questions go to trial and appeal.
