UK accepts all 44 recommendations of doctor-led commission on regulating health AI

PolicyHealthGovernmentGBConfirmed

The UK government accepted in full the 44 recommendations of the National Commission into the Regulation of AI in Healthcare, an independent body set up by the MHRA in September 2025 and led by NHS doctors after evidence from more than 12,000 patients, clinicians and members of the public. The response moves medical-AI oversight towards whole-lifecycle regulation with continuous real-world monitoring, and opens phase 3 of the MHRA's AI Airlock sandbox, focused on post-market surveillance. Draft guidance on managing changes to AI devices is due in December 2026 and a full roadmap in spring 2027.

Why it matters

Medical-AI makers selling in the UK should expect ongoing monitoring duties after approval, not a one-off clearance, bringing the UK closer to the FDA's lifecycle approach.
