ECMWF puts its machine-learning weather model AIFS into operational use

The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts began running AIFS Single, a deterministic machine-learning forecast at 28 km grid spacing, alongside its physics-based model. ECMWF reported gains of up to 20% on tropical-cyclone track forecasts and roughly 1,000 times less energy per forecast, and made the model openly available to member states and the wider community.
