Google DeepMind publishes SynthID Bio watermarking for AI-designed proteins in Nature

SynthID Bio embeds hidden signatures in AI-generated protein sequences and AlphaFold 3 structure predictions while preserving function: lab tests with Adaptyv Bio on VEGF-A, the SARS-CoV-2 spike RBD and PD-L1 binders showed similar binding and hit rates to unwatermarked designs. Code and data are open, and Stanford's Hie lab and Arc Institute are extending it to phage genomes.

Why it matters

It offers DNA-synthesis screeners a way to verify that unfamiliar sequences came from vetted models, a practical biosecurity layer for open protein design.
